Proper chain tension is crucial for acceptable service life of chain, clutch and sprockets. To achieve proper tension, take the center to center distance of your drives (engine shaft and rear axle). Total mid span movement should be 4-6%. So an 18 inch center line plus 5% would be .9" if mid span travel.
The use of a master link is discouraged by many manufacturers however they are convenient and sometimes necessary. If you must use a master, always face the retaining clip in a fashion so that it is "forced" onto the link in the direction of chain travel.
